Misogyny

“Brother, she is not worth what she doth cost
The keeping.”  – Troilus and Cressida

It continues to astound me the amount of misogyny that persists in the world.  To be honest, before this recent gang rape in India made international headlines, I had no idea it was as bad there as it is, but I shouldn’t be surprised.  I am very lucky to have been born where I was born, and to have lived the life I have so far…not many are so fortunate.

Gun Control

“Patch grief with proverbs.” – Much Ado About Nothing

or platitudes, or song lyrics, or other stupid sayings that many people think are helpful but that tend to just grate on my nerves.  Wouldn’t it help to stop the grief of mass shootings if we implemented stricter gun control laws, for example on assault weapons?  My husband thinks such laws would be useless in stopping gun violence, but just because we can’t stop something totally, does that mean we don’t even try to limit it marginally?

Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre

“O horror, horror, horror!  Tongue nor heart
Cannot conceive nor name thee.”  – Macbeth

I came across a timeline on the web of mass shootings in the U.S. since 1999.  It was chilling.  I had somehow assumed mass shootings like the one yesterday at Sandy Hook Elementary (only) happened every few years.  No, it appears they happen every few months.  What is going on??

“I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in his grace.” – Much Ado About Nothing

One of my personal failings is that I have a hard time letting things go.  How do other people do it?  Just forget about and gloss over the abuse and obnoxious behavior other people commit?  I know that religion and psychotherapy both tell me to let things go already because, in the end, I’m mostly hurting myself by agonizing over them.  But I find it so hard!  Sometimes I just can’t help being an honest, straightforward canker, rather than a superficial, sycophantic rose, in an idiot colleague’s presence.  Will things ever get better?

Mayan Prophecy

December 2nd, 2012 → 9:09 am

“If you can look into the seeds of time,
And say which grain will grow, and which will not,
Speak then to me.”  – Macbeth

Twice in the past week random people (both at checkout lines) talked to me about the 2012 Mayan Prophecy.  The first time was funny, the second time was weird.  Why do people believe this stuff?  If there was a way to see into the future then, please, as the quote above suggests, speak it to me.

Sexiest Man Alive

“O jest unseen, inscrutable, invisible,
As a nose on a man’s face, or a weathercock on a steeple!”  – Two Gentlemen of Verona

The Onion did a satire on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, calling him the Sexiest Man Alive for 2012.  But apparently, not everyone realized it was a joke!  China’s People’s Daily newspaper picked up the piece and went with it.  How funny!!

Guest Post – Peaches Petraeus

“Reputation, reputation, reputation!”– Othello

I have to hand it over to Maureen Dowd today, who this morning titled her op-ed piece in The New York Times with the above Shakespeare quote (which continues: “Oh, I have lost my reputation!”).  I had no idea David Petraeus’ nickname was Peaches?!

“Look like the innocent flower,
But be the serpent under it.”  – Macbeth

What else is there to say, except:  What a shame, what a shame. What a disappointing shame.

99 Years

“It was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answered it.”  – Julius Caesar

A mother in Dallas apparently super-glued her toddler’s hands to the wall (among other abuses).  The judge this week handed down a prison sentence of 99 years.  I can’t stop thinking about this case.  It is truly inconceivable to me.  What goes on in a person’s mind (and a mother, no less) to justify gluing a defenseless child’s hands to the wall??

Kate Middleton

“I was
A morsel for a monarch.”  – Antony and Cleopatra

Kate Middleton was a morsel for a monarch when she married Prince William.  Now it appears that she is a morsel for the French media.  I think it is just awful what they did to her.  Can’t a person have some privacy?  And it’s not because she’s royalty, anyone should be allowed to assume naked photos of themselves won’t be published without permission!  Don’t you think?!?
