Rosh Hashanah

September 29th, 2011 → 8:49 am

    “In religion,
What damned error but some sober brow
Will bless it, and approve it with a text?” – Merchant of Venice

Happy New Year all you Jews out there!  On this Day of Judgment here’s hoping your bad deeds get absolved and your name is written for another year in the Book of Life.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta

September 27th, 2011 → 7:51 am

“Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head.” – As You Like It

This morning the New York Times has a tear-jerking op-ed about a man named Energy Maburutse who was born with the bone disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta, but despite his handicap has made it all the way from a poor village in Zimbabwe to a decent college in America.  I love stories like this.  This one especially because I happen to have Osteogenesis Imperfecta myself.

Rick Perry II

September 25th, 2011 → 7:41 am

“O Hamlet, what a falling off was there.” – Hamlet

I keep reading about how the star of Rick Perry is falling fast, especially since the debate in Florida last Thursday night.  It’s still too early to write him off, of course, but I’m not surprised people are beginning to lose their unrealistic admiration of him.

End of Summer

September 23rd, 2011 → 3:19 am

“Summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” – Sonnet 18

I had to wear a jacket yesterday, for the first time in months.  It is definitely getting cold out.  Bummer.

Figs

September 21st, 2011 → 6:37 am

“I love long life better than figs.” – Antony and Cleopatra

This quote seems a little odd, until you realize that in ancient times “fig” had a sexual connotation.  Aristophanes, for example, in Peace wrote: “Pick your figs. May his be large and hard. May hers be sweet.”  On that note, the choice between a long life and figs can indeed seem like something of a toss-up.

Cats

September 19th, 2011 → 8:35 am

“I could endure anything before but a cat.” – All’s Well that Ends Well

Apparently Shakespeare was not at all fond of cats, which is too bad, because I love them.  I guess this marks my second disagreement now with the great bard (though, like the first disagreement on economics, I can certainly come up with a twist that brings us closer together: think feral cats of the 16th century).  Since my husband and baby have been away all week, my cat NoMe and I have been comforting each other and cuddling at all hours of the day, in all rooms of the house.  We’re thick as thieves right now…

Michele Bachmann

September 17th, 2011 → 7:43 am

“…have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?” – Macbeth

Michele Bachmann has been repeating the claim that vaccines cause mental retardation, despite the fact that there is no scientific evidence for this whatsoever.  Her stance is based simply on the fact that somebody told her so.  Uh…huh?

Separation

September 15th, 2011 → 7:23 am

    “This must my comfort be,
That sun that warms you here shall shine on me.” – Richard II

My husband took my baby and flew off to Nevada to visit his brother.  So I’m home alone.
It’s scary quiet in here…

Republican Presidential Debate

September 13th, 2011 → 5:13 am

“A great reckoning in a little room.” – As You Like It

It appears that the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination, Rick Perry, was attacked on all sides last night.  It’s about time he answer for his views on social security, women’s rights, money in politics, and more.

9/11 Anniversary

September 11th, 2011 → 7:55 am

“One for all or all for one we gage.” – Lucrece

On this 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy I feel a strong comraderie with my fellow Americans.  One for all and all for one! – if we can just stick together, work together, and look out for each other, we can do anything.  I know it.
