How to Deal with People

“Weighest they words before thou givest them breath.” – Othello

Many of us are returning to work this week.  Where, like myself, we may perhaps have some annoying colleagues to deal with.  In that spirit, I offer the above piece of advice.  Not that I always follow it either, but it would be good if I did.

Newt Gingrich

“I am not only witty in myself, but the cause that wit is in other men.” – Henry IV, Part II

This pompous line was said by Falstaff, a comedic, rotund character who regularly thought far too highly of himself (remember that “wit” often referred to intelligence in Shakespeare’s day).  Who doesn’t think Newt Gingrich is a modern day Falstaff?

Everything

“…we cry that we are come
To this great stage of fools.”  – King Lear

Originally I was thinking that this quote fit the Republican presidential debate last night (and in particular the gaffe by Perry).  But the more I think about it, the more it seems to fit everything that is going on right now.  The political leaders in Europe and their poor handling of the debt crisis, the shocking sexual abuse cover-up at Penn State, a number of my colleagues at work.  It really makes one want to throw up their hands and cry!

Jon Corzine

November 6th, 2011 → 5:13 am

“All that glisters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told;
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold.”  – The Merchant of Venice

This quote, that not all that glitters is really gold, applies both to Jon Corzine and his failed firm, MF Global.  Corzine, we now know, was certainly not the talented man he seemed – he simply took big risks and stole other people’s money.  And MF Global was not a safe place to park your retirement funds, despite what laws and regulations were around to protect it.  I feel as though you can’t trust anyone and nothing is what it seems right now…it’s an awful feeling.

Greek Debt

November 2nd, 2011 → 6:34 am

“In Greece…
Though there the people had more absolute power –
I say they nourished disobedience, fed
The ruin of the state.”  – Coriolanus

The problems of the Euro Crisis and the Greek debt just aren’t going away.  Every time Europe gets close to closing in on a deal, either they don’t, or the deal turns out to be pretty lame.  In economics, as in politics, one needs to get ahead of these situations to solve them.  But now the Europeans are so far behind, I don’t know what is going to happen…

“A stirring dwarf we do allowance give before a sleeping giant.” – Troilus and Cressida

Why is it that we seem more concerned about Demi and Ashton’s breakup, then about the threat of global warming?  About non-existent inflation, then the very real high unemployment rate?  About Chaz Bono on Dancing with the Stars, rather than death and the war in Afghanistan?  I’m not blaming anybody because it seems to be a universal, nonpartisan phenomenon, but why is it that we get so distracted by stirring dwarfs when there are so many larger sleeping giants about?

Annoying Colleague II

September 3rd, 2011 → 7:43 am

“Were I like thee I’d throw away myself.” – Timon of Athens

Shakespeare has so many good insults for stupid, annoying, and evil people it’s amazing.  This one today especially fits that awful colleague of mine (whom I’ve mentioned earlier in this blog).  I absolutely can’t stand that man, he’s obnoxious, sexist, bigoted, closed-minded, unempathic, and just plain an embarrassment to the human race.  Why does God put such people on this planet?!?

Rick Perry

“And in his brain,
Which is as dry as the remainder biscuit
After a voyage, he hath strange places crammed
With observation, the which he vents
In mangled forms.”  – As You Like It

Rick Perry doesn’t believe in climate change, nor in the separation of church and state, and he has expressed a wish for Texas to secede from the Union.  This is the Republican’s political savior?

Rupert Murdoch

July 25th, 2011 → 7:36 am

“Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself.” – Macbeth

I keep reading news reports comparing the Rupert Murdoch phone hacking scandal to a Shakespearean tragedy.  Actually, some say it IS like a Shakespearean tragedy because it involves both familial and political interconnections, while others say it is NOT like a Shakespearean tragedy because Murdoch isn’t sympathetic at all, and some even say the scandal is like Shakespeare, Harry Potter, Charles Dickens, and J.R. Tolkien all at once!  Phew!  I’ve included some of the links so you can decide for yourself.
