“In a false quarrel there is no true valor.” – Much Ado About Nothing
The Republicans and Democrats in Congress are posturing over raising the debt ceiling, when they both know it has to be done. It’s a false quarrel and I’m sick of all their political posturing. Get over it, compromise, and raise the debt ceiling already!!

“O sleep, O gentle sleep,
Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frighted thee,
That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down,
And steep my senses in forgetfulness?” – King Henry IV, Part II
I went to bed only three hours ago, yet I can’t seem to sleep. I woke up initially to go to the bathroom, but the ache in my hip when I stepped on it in the dark reminded me all over again that I still can’t walk and made me mad. And now the madness has only grown – towards the man in line who tried to cut in front me, towards the service agent who hung up on me on the phone, towards that cute little dog who pooped in my yard again…don’t these people/animals know that I’m a pathetic little gimp high on Vicodin and I need to get some sleep already or I may just explode?!

“Oh, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial.” – Othello
Rod Blagojevich was convicted on 17 of 20 counts in his retrial yesterday. They say he was “stunned.” I imagine he is still more concerned with himself and with his reputation, than with what he did (or didn’t do for) the state of Illinois. Uch.

“Alas the day, what shall I do with my doublet and hose?” – As You Like It
A camera crew from HEC-TV is showing up at my house in a few hours to interview me about my day job as an environmental economist (http://www.umsl.edu/~kosnikl/). I’ve done radio and paper interviews before, and brief TV clips, but never an in-depth interview at my house! What shall I wear??
(P.S. The show will air sometime in July. Stay tuned for more details on exactly when…)

“[Thou hath] not so much brain as ear wax.” – Troilus & Cressida
I have a colleague at work who fits this description to a tee. He drives me up the wall and last night over dinner my husband had to remind me that there are people like this everywhere – so get over it. Do you have a colleague/neighbor/family member who drives you up the wall? Do you wish sometimes you could give them the perfect insult? See how Shakespeare would have done it at the Shakespearean Insulter: http://www.pangloss.com/seidel/Shaker/

Lord Chief Justice: “Your means are very slender, and your waste is great.”
Falstaff: “I would it were otherwise, I would my means were greater and my waist slenderer.” – King Henry IV, Part II
An apt commentary on the current U.S. budget crisis. Though isn’t this true for all of us? I read a report the other day that even our babies are now too fat (!): http://www.npr.org/blogs

“With the help of a surgeon he might yet recover, and prove an ass.” — Midsummer Night’s Dream
About nine weeks ago now I had surgery on my left hip – my third surgery in that area since a car accident in Turkey about 15 years ago. Every day for the last nine weeks I’ve worked at physical therapy and getting my strength back and I hope soon to return to being an ass. I know some people already think I am an ass and if that’s so, then I really hope to return to being my old self again soon. Cheers.

Welcome to my blog! After much thought and consideration I’ve decided to make this blog conform to a particular theme. Perhaps I’ll upend things from time to time with randomly interjected comments, but for the most part, this blog will be devoted to Shakespeare quotes and witticisms. Thus, the blog’s unofficial title: “The Shakespeare Quote of the Day!”
Every morning, in the early hours of the day as I sip my coffee and wait to hear my baby’s first howl, I’ll sit down at the computer and offer up a Shakespeare quote that feels pertinent at that moment. I may add some commentary on it, I may not, I’m not sure yet, but I do know that I’ll explore all of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets, and for anyone who enjoys an apt observation, a biting quip, or a searing description, stay tuned… Shakespeare never disappoints!
