Vladimir Putin’s Aggression

March 2nd, 2014 → 6:00 am

“Must make perforce a universal prey
And last eat up himself.”  – Troilus and Cressida

What is Putin doing?  He seems to want to take over the Crimean Peninsula.  Isn’t Russia a large enough country for him to run?  Doesn’t he have enough on his hands with internal dissent, a poor economy, and the remains of the Olympics to deal with (what is going to happen to Sochi now?)  I would imagine antics and overreach like this would eventually ruin him, but the arc of history is long, and it appears at times to swerve in distressing directions.

P.S. Happy March.  Who’s loving this latest snowstorm we’re having?

Vladimir Putin – Again

February 28th, 2014 → 9:44 am

“The laws are mine, not thine.
Who can arraign me for’t?”  – King Lear

Almost three years ago I posted the above quote in relation to Vladimir Putin.  Sadly, it continues to apply.

Viktor Yanukovych Flees

February 23rd, 2014 → 6:49 am

“With all his crimes broad-blown, as flush as May.” – Hamlet

I have a good friend of Ukrainian descent whose been educating me/updating me on what is happening in Kiev these days.  The vitriol she, and her family, feels towards Viktor Yanukovych (and Vladimir Putin for that matter) startles me, but the more I learn about the situation, the more it appears justified.  He flew the coop yesterday and escaped Kiev as protesters stormed his palatial estate.  I only hope he knows enough to relinquish power peacefully now.

Free Speech ≠ Consequent-Free Speech

February 9th, 2014 → 6:29 am

“How cam’st thou in this pickle?” – The Tempest

Irina Rodnina, one of the athletes given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremonies the other night, apparently posted a racist photo of Barack Obama on twitter a few months ago.  When condemned for it, she unapologetically wrote “freedom of speech is freedom of speech,” and basically, get over it.  I’m sick of bigoted, racist, sexist people posting offensive things and then acting surprised when the world reacts (another recent example, billionaire Thomas Perkins).  Yes, there is such a thing as free speech (that’s why you could post it at all, Irina).  But since when is free speech consequent free speech??  If you’re going to go off, just know that you are also going to be held responsible for what you say.  Which is exactly how it should be, of course.

Francois Hollande

“And then the lover,
Sighing like a furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow.”  – As You Like It

The French president is an idiot.

A Chris Christie Adage

“Revenge should have no bounds.” – Hamlet

If this isn’t the polar opposite of Nelson Mandela and his approach to politics, I don’t know what is.  Which leader would you rather have?

Nazi Art Trove

November 5th, 2013 → 5:23 am

“I could a tale unfold whose lightest word
Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood,
Make thy two eyes like stars start from their spheres,
Thy knotted and combined locks to part,
And each particular hair to stand an end
Like quills upon the fretful porpentine.”  – Hamlet

It makes my blood boil when I hear about thieves like Cornelius Gurlitt – whose father left him over a billion dollars worth of Nazi-era stolen art – who live a comfortable life until they are 80 years old and never pay a thing for their crimes.  The Nazis were terrible.  And it continues to be terrible that their crimes still are not ended.

The Republican Perspective

October 12th, 2013 → 6:31 am

“A wretched soul bruised with adversity,
We bid quiet when we hear it cry;
But were we burdened with like weight of pain,
As much, or more, we should ourselves complain.”  – Comedy of Errors

This is an incredibly apt insight into how most Republicans seem to think.  They downplay the needs of the poor, women, the middle class, basically anybody they can’t relate to.  But the minute something actually happens to them, the minute their pet project loses funding or their son or daughter can’t get a student loan or decent health care, then suddenly they’re up in arms.  It’s as though to be a Republican you have to view the world with blinders on, only seeing your own straight ahead perspective, completely unable (or unwilling) to see anything from anyone else’s point of view.

Tea Party Republicans

October 2nd, 2013 → 5:27 am

“Harsh rage,
Defect of manners, want of government,
Pride, haughtiness, opinion, and disdain,
The least of which haunting a nobleman
Loseth men’s hearts.”  – Henry IV

Let me just add:  idiots.

Dennis Rodman

September 27th, 2013 → 6:10 am

“He is given
To sports, to wildness, and much company.”  – Julius Caesar

On the news feed on my phone this morning was the headline:  “Dennis Rodman Reveals Kim Jong Un’s Baby.”  I’m sorry, but that is one of the oddest sentences I’ve ever seen in the news feed.  I still can’t get over Dennis Rodman’s and Kim Jong Un’s “friendship,” let alone Rodman handling the dictator’s baby.  Something about it all just seems so darn weird…
