“So shaken as we are, so wan with care.” – Henry IV

We’re still sick around here….but, thankfully, on the mend…

The Flu

January 28th, 2012 → 7:43 am

“Unwieldy, slow, heavy and pale as lead.”  Romeo and Juliet

My boys (both husband and son) have been throwing up since Thursday evening.  If I have to clean up any more curdled, stinky stomach contents I think I’m going to be sick myself.  It’s actually a wonder I’m not ill yet – cross my fingers.

Update, 9:20 a.m.:  Now my cat, NoMe, has jumped on the bandwagon and begun barfing up in various rooms around the house.  It is C R A Z Y around here!!!

Hectic Days

“Where is the life that late I led?” – The Taming of the Shrew

It’s barely two weeks since the semester started at school, but already things feel so hectic!  Students, classes, lecture notes, problem sets…where did the time go for just sitting at my desk and playing on the computer??!!

Yartzeit

January 24th, 2012 → 6:37 am

“The ground that gave them first has them again.
Their pleasures here are past, so is their pain.” – Cymbeline

Today is the anniversary (“yartzeit” in Judaism) of my father’s death.  It’s been a long time – he died while I was in high school – but I still miss him and think about him every year.  I know that at the end of his life he had some joys, but also some serious troubles…if one is now gone, at least the other is too.  I wish I could give you a hug, Daddy.

“Be bloody, bold, and resolute!” – Macbeth

And ruthless, condescending, and petty, I might add.  Look out, here comes Newt…

The Rich & The Poor

January 20th, 2012 → 5:46 am

“Whiles I am a beggar, I will rail
    And say there is no sin but to be rich;
And being rich, my virtue then shall be
To say there is no vice but beggary.” – King John

Why must it ever be so?

School

January 18th, 2012 → 4:44 am

“And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel,
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.” – As You Like It

School starts again this week at colleges and universities across the country.  When I was a student I didn’t creep to class so unwillingly as Shakespeare describes here, but then again, I was sorta geeky.  That’s probably why I became a professor, after all.  Happy first week of classes everyone!

Update: Lisbeth Salander

January 14th, 2012 → 2:50 pm

So I just watched the Swedish version of the movie The Girl With the Dragoon Tattoo (I still haven’t seen the U.S. version).  And I thought it was quite good!  I even liked the changes they made, like having the run-in with the boys in the subway station, and how that showed early on that she was a fighter.  I’m pretty sure this Lisbeth wasn’t under 5′ either, but whatever, I’ll just have to get over that.  Verdict:  Thumbs up for the Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragoon Tattoo.

This Crazy Winter Weather

January 14th, 2012 → 7:00 am

“Cold snow melts with the sun’s hot beams.” – Henry VI, Part II

I know it’s been crazy in Alaska with snowfall topping 318 inches in some areas (!), but here in St. Louis we’ve barely had any winter at all.  There is a tiny skiff of snow out there right now, but I hear that’s going to burn off this weekend with temperatures getting into the fifties on Sunday!  In the middle of January!  What is going on?!?
