Vladimir Putin – Again

February 28th, 2014 → 9:44 am

“The laws are mine, not thine.
Who can arraign me for’t?” – King Lear

Almost three years ago I posted the above quote in relation to Vladimir Putin.  Sadly, it continues to apply.

Turning the Dead into Diamonds

February 25th, 2014 → 8:19 am

“Let’s talk of graves, of worms, and epitaphs,
Make dust our paper, and with rainy eyes
Write sorrow on the bosom of the earth.
Let’s choose executors and talk of wills.
And yet not so – for what can we bequeath
Save our deposed bodies to the ground? – Richard II

Apparently we can bequeath diamonds when we die.  Did you know that there is a company that will take your dead loved one’s ashes and press them into a diamond?  Any color you want – white, pink, blue, yellow.  Any size you want to – 1/4 a carat, 1/2 a carat, more.  Then you can set this precious stone as a ring or pendant and wear your dead one around your neck forever.  I can’t tell if I’m horrified, or totally on board!  The prices are ridiculous – is there even any resale value on these things? – but the concept is certainly intriguing.

Viktor Yanukovych Flees

February 23rd, 2014 → 6:49 am

“With all his crimes broad-blown, as flush as May.” – Hamlet

I have a good friend of Ukrainian descent whose been educating me/updating me on what is happening in Kiev these days.  The vitriol she, and her family, feels towards Viktor Yanukovych (and Vladimir Putin for that matter) startles me, but the more I learn about the situation, the more it appears justified.  He flew the coop yesterday and escaped Kiev as protesters stormed his palatial estate.  I only hope he knows enough to relinquish power peacefully now.

Batmom

February 20th, 2014 → 8:06 am

“I have touched the highest point of all my greatness.” – Henry VIII

Yesterday in the car my son anointed me “Batmom.”  He was asking what I was going to be for Halloween and though I suggested many good options, including Spiderman, Dr. Gru, Ariel, and Flint Lockwood, he vetoed them all.  Then, since he himself was going to be Batman, he told me I could be Batman’s Helper, or Batmom.  I felt like I’d reached the pinnacle of motherhood.  In Bat solidarity I thrust my arm in the air along with my son and together we slayed demons all night when we got home, after dinner of course.

“When you do dance, I wish you
A wave o’th’ sea, that you might ever do
    Nothing but that,…”

Congratulations to Meryl Davis and Charlie White on their gold medal in ice dancing last night.  Beautiful!

Happy Birthday Mom!

February 16th, 2014 → 7:56 am

“Where thou art, there is the world itself.” – Henry VI, Part II

If my mom were still alive, she’d be turning 65 today.  And I’d likely be teasing her about retiring or some such thing.  Where ever she actually is, in whatever other world, I hope she is happy.

3 Year Old Boys

February 11th, 2014 → 5:56 am

“My thoughts are ripe in mischief.” – Twelfth Night

My son is driving my husband and I a little crazy with his mischief making lately; tearing the contents of my purse apart, secreting seashells from off my husband’s nightstand, taking forever in the potty so he can avoid having to go to bed.  He’s so darn cute it’s hard to stay mad.  I just hope the above quote won’t still be applicable when he’s a 4 year old boy, and a 5 year old boy, and, sigh, a 6 year old boy…will it?

Free Speech ≠ Consequent-Free Speech

February 9th, 2014 → 6:29 am

“How cam’st thou in this pickle?” – The Tempest

Irina Rodnina, one of the athletes given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremonies the other night, apparently posted a racist photo of Barack Obama on twitter a few months ago.  When condemned for it, she unapologetically wrote “freedom of speech is freedom of speech,” and basically, get over it.  I’m sick of bigoted, racist, sexist people posting offensive things and then acting surprised when the world reacts (another recent example, billionaire Thomas Perkins).  Yes, there is such a thing as free speech (that’s why you could post it at all, Irina).  But since when is free speech consequent free speech??  If you’re going to go off, just know that you are also going to be held responsible for what you say.  Which is exactly how it should be, of course.
