Bashar al-Assad & the Massacre at Houla

May 30th, 2012 → 7:40 am

“There is no sure foundation set on blood,
No certain life achieved by others’ death.”  – King John

Last time I wrote about Assad and the siege of Hama; this time about Assad and the massacre at Houla.  As Shakespeare so aptly phrased it, you do not secure your throne by killing your people.

Insult

May 14th, 2012 → 8:23 am

“…that trunk of humours, that bolting-hutch of beastliness, that swollen parcel of dropsies, that huge bombard of sack, that stuffed cloak-bag of guts, that roasted Manningtree ox with pudding in his belly, that reverend vice, that grey Iniquity, that father ruffian, that vanity in years.” – Henry IV

Oddly enough, I’m not annoyed at anyone right now – not my husband, not my boss, not any of my friends… Which is too bad because Shakespeare has so many good insults I could quote! Rather than wait until somebody pisses me off, I thought I’d quote one today anyway, maybe somebody out there can use it for somebody that’s annoying them at the moment.

Anders Behring Breivik

“What a brood of traitors have we here!” – Henry VI

Anders Behring Breivik is the Norwegian man on trial right now for killing 77 people last summer.  He claims he did it to defend Norway against traitorous immigrants, when in truth, he is the traitor.  He has sold out common decency for the benefit of villainous horror.

Jonathan Franzen

“No word to save thee.” – Measure for Measure

Jonathan Franzen, alleged author of the year, expressed his true nature with this misogynistic article about Edith Wharton in the New YorkerIt makes me enraged, the misogyny against women that still exists in the world.  I imagine there will always be racism, bigotry, meanness of some form in society, whether it be against women, overweight people, African Americans, or whatever, but why?  Why does it have to be this way??  It just makes me so mad!!

Egypt’s Transitional Government

“There is pretty orders beginning, I can tell you.  It is but heading and hanging.” – Measure for Measure

What is Egypt thinking?  Putting non-profit workers on trial for…promoting democracy?  Thomas Friedman’s op-ed today in the New York Times summed it up well – Egypt’s leaders really should be worrying about poverty, illiteracy, and the economy, not a few foreign non-profit organizations.

“I am a feather for each wind that blows.” – Winter’s Tale

It’s turning into one of those weeks.  Where everything just seems to overpower me and bring me down.  Work, people, the internet?!?!  Nothing is that bad, of course, it just feels that bad.  Why is that?  And how can I make it go away?

“The patient dies while the physician sleeps;
The orphan pines while the oppressor feeds;
Justice is feasting while the widow weeps;
Advice is sporting while infection breeds.”  – The Rape of Lucrece

The people of North Korea – the sick, the orphaned, the widowed – deserve more.  There really isn’t much more to add.

Bashar al-Assad

January 8th, 2012 → 6:42 am

“The king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make when all those legs and arms and heads chopped off in a battle shall join together at the latter day and cry all ‘We died at such a place.'” – Henry V

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad continues to kill his people.  The siege of Hama last July was the worst, in part because of the historical symbolism of the place, but these latest protests and deaths are pretty bad too because they indicate that Assad just isn’t getting the message.  It is time for him to go!
