“[Cruz]…that would make his will
Lord of his reason.” – Antony and Cleopatra
Everyone’s saying it now, not just Democrats but Republicans too. Senator Ted Cruz is crazy.

“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” – Henry IV
A reader of this blog pointed out to me that the last quote (repeated above) could have easily applied to the Syrian President himself, and not just to those who have to figure out what to do about him! Yes, one hopes that Assad is feeling uneasy right now. If he isn’t, if he’s enjoying the war and the killing and the international attention, then he’s a psychopath.

“You base [baseball] player.” – King Lear
So I guess Alex Rodriguez was booed on Monday night, when he played for the New York Yankees despite an official suspension for doping. Why do they do it? Why do all these millionaire sports stars ruin the integrity of the game with artificial enhancers? I’ll never really quite understand it.

“The devil hath power
T’assume a pleasing shape.” – Hamlet
Just because the devil can look innocent and cute, you don’t make him look that way and glamorize him on the cover of a major magazine! What was publisher Jann Wenner thinking? I commend Walgreens, CVS pharmacy, and all the other stores that are refusing to sell this issue. If I had a subscription to the magazine (which I don’t), I’d cancel it.

“Your dishonour
Mangles true judgement, and bereaves the state
Of that integrity which should become it.” – Coriolanus
I didn’t write about Edward Snowden when his NSA leaking activities first came to light a couple of weeks ago, because I wasn’t sure what to make of it. But the more I read, the more angered I get. What gives him the right to breach national security for an entire country? How pompous of him. He’s put my, and all my fellow Americans, security at risk, and for what exactly? I hope they catch and prosecute the guy.

“Landlord of [Turkey] art thou now, not king.” – Richard II
The prime minister of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, seems to have let ten years in power get to his head. He can not just do whatever he wants without any input from the people; at least, he can’t do it and still claim that he is leading a democracy. The protestors have many valid points and he needs to listen to them.

“It is the bright day that brings forth the adder,
And that craves wary walking.” – Julius Caesar
Meaning: On a bright day snakes can come out in the open, so be careful where you walk.
I was shocked a couple of days ago at the Notre-Dame suicide; I’m shocked even more today hearing about the broad daylight hacking attack in South London. What’s happening these days??? What goes through a person’s mind to just run someone down in broad daylight, hack them to death with a meat cleaver, and then stick around to talk about it to passersby in the street? And while Cameron, Obama, and other Western leaders have condemned the attack, where’s the high profile Muslim leader/representative doing the same?

“I would be loath to cast away my speech:
for besides that it is excellently well penned,
I have taken great pains to con it.” – Twelfth Night
Two countries that I have great respect and affection for, Turkey and Egypt, have both had disturbing crack-downs on free speech lately. Turkey has not only become the world’s top jailer of journalists, but the recent arrest of Fazil Say on blasphemy charges is both ridiculous and disheartening. And then there’s Bassem Youssef, the “Jon Stewart of Egypt,” who was recently interrogated by the government for his comedy show. Doesn’t Mohammed Morsi know that the way to deal with criticism is to address it, not try to illegitimately get rid of it? And what really bugs me about both these governments is that they crack down on anti-Muslim speech they don’t like, but vitriol against anyone else (i.e. Jews or Christians), well, that’s just fine.

“O piteous spectacle! O bloody times!” – Henry VI, Part III
I just can’t wrap my head around what makes someone plant lethal bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. What are they thinking? I can relate to wanting to get back at someone who has hurt you, but wanting to hurt completely innocent people? Children even? I just don’t get it. It’s so heartbreaking. Why? Why?

“How much, methinks, I could despise this man,
Were I not bound in charity against it?” – Henry VIII
I was chatting with a friend yesterday when she mentioned how demoralized she was. One of her co-workers makes her job particularly difficult with his bigoted, uninformed rants (they aren’t necessarily directed at her, but they are unpleasant nonetheless). I dislike this person as well so I could readily sympathize with her. In the end, I suppose, all you can do is have charity for the idiotic a**holes among us.
