Popes & Republicans

“These tedious old fools.” – Hamlet

I have to say, I’m a bit disappointed the new pope is another conservative, old white male.  I also can’t believe what I’m hearing out of CPAC (the Conservative Political Action Conference), that the GOP lost the last election not because of the message they were preaching, but because they just didn’t quite have the right messenger.  No women’s rights, no gay rights, no equality and support for all – nothing needs to change there!  Aren’t these tedious old fools ever going to wake up?  And realize that the world around them is changing?

A Cowardly End

March 11th, 2013 → 8:33 am

“Every bondman in his own hand bears
The power to cancel his captivity.”  – Julius Caesar

Apparently one of the assailants in the India gang-rape case has committed suicide in jail.  A cowardly end; I would have preferred he faced justice and the long, long years of a desolate existence in jail.

Kim Jong-un

March 7th, 2013 → 6:32 am

“If I chance to talk a little wild, forgive me;
I had it from my father.”  – Henry VIII

I woke this morning to news that North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong-un, has threatened the U.S. with a nuclear attack.  What?!?!  I guess the kid is upset at proposed U.N. sanctions in response to their latest nuclear test.  All I know is that a hyperactive, testosterone-filled, 29 year old child should not be leading an entire country with nuclear weapons at its disposal.  Crazy dictator.

Marissa Mayer

March 2nd, 2013 → 8:21 am

“Lowliness is young ambition’s ladder,
Whereto the climber-upward turns his face;
But when he once attains the upmost round,
He then unto the ladder turns his back,
Looks in the clouds, scorning the base degrees
By which he did ascend.”  – Julius Caesar

How disappointing of Marissa Mayer.  The new Yahoo! CEO has decided that telecommuting doesn’t work (and in a tech company!).  That and her recent comments about how easy motherhood is (well yes, if you’re rich and can build a nursery next door to your office) has sealed it for me – I don’t like her and I think she’s going to be an awful leader.  If you can’t put yourself in other people’s shoes, if you can’t understand the need for certain options in circumstances other than your own, then your blind, selfish, and ineffective.

Italy’s Election

February 28th, 2013 → 6:10 am

“Here comes a pair of very strange beasts, which in all tongues are called fools.” – As You Like It

Italy had a national election this past weekend, that resulted in a stalemate.  Apparently two of the biggest winners were Silvio Berlusconi, a corrupt, misogynistic, zombie-like fool, and Beppe Grillo, a comedian and actual fool.  All I can think to say is:  thank you Italy, for making us look not half so bad in comparison.

Oscar Pistorius

“It is a damned and a bloody work;
The graceless action of a heavy hand.”  – King John

Not knowing all the facts and going completely on instinct, I think the guy is guilty of murdering his girlfriend.  I mean, even if she was just going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, why would she lock the door?  But, I’ll try to reserve my immediate defense of the victim and wait and watch how this thing plays out…

Insult of the Day

February 21st, 2013 → 6:14 am

“I do desire we may be better strangers.” – As You Like It

Wouldn’t this just be the best insult to give to someone you didn’t like?  Not that I’d ever remember it in the moment, or have the courage to actually say it if I did.  But here’s to one of my favorite subtle, yet withering, Shakespearean insults.

Richard III

“Sin, death, and hell have set their marks on him.” – Richard III

And apparently, that’s how his remains were identified.  It’s been utterly fascinating to read about the 500 year old bones of Richard III found in a parking lot.  It’ll be interesting to see the new theories and thoughts that come out of the discovery…  if only we could find the two princes that he murdered, now that would be awesome!

Revenge

February 3rd, 2013 → 9:19 am

“He’s revengeful, and I know his sword
Hath a sharp edge.”  – Henry VIII

I read this morning about the death of Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL and author of a book (“American Sniper”) that detailed his killing of more than 150 insurgents.  All I have to say is, while he clearly was a very smart shooter, he was not a very smart author.  Who writes a book about it??  Of course someone was going to then seek him out for revenge.  Was two minutes of fame (and I imagine a decent book advance) worth it?

Gerard Depardieu

January 12th, 2013 → 4:58 am

“Wicked meaning in a lawful deed.” – All’s Well That Ends Well

Is Gerard Depardieu a monster?  I’ve seem him called such because he gave up his French citizenship and became a Russian on January 3 simply to avoid high taxes.  I do think he’s an ass – though more for his treatment of women and people in general, than for his views on taxation.  Admittedly, I might be slightly peeved if I faced a 75% taxation rate as well.  In the end, I guess the joke is on him as it appears the French constitutional court struck down the high tax rate as “confiscatory.”  At least he has easy access to great caviar now…
