Hot Days

July 3rd, 2012 → 4:29 am

“Now these hot days is the mad blood stirring.” – Romeo and Juliet

We’ve had 100 degree temperatures for over a week now in St. Louis.  I hear it’s even worse in other parts of the Midwest and in the eastern United States.  1.7 million people apparently don’t have any power.  I don’t know if it’s the heat to blame, but I haven’t been able to sleep for a few nights now.  Awake at around three in the morning, drinking coffee and eating cookies by four.  I sure hope something breaks soon and I can get a cool and complete night’s rest…zzzz….

Summer Days

July 1st, 2012 → 7:50 am

“There’s not a minute of our lives should stretch
Without some pleasure now.”  – Antony and Cleopatra

It’s weird now that I have tenure and am only working a normal work week.  I find it almost difficult to relax and enjoy a lazy summer day.  But what is life for?  What does it matter if I work an extra hour, or sit in the sun an extra hour?  I know my husband, my baby, and even Shakespeare all seem to be telling me to chill and take some pleasure now and again.  Maybe I’ll try it today…

Marital Rivalry

June 15th, 2012 → 8:12 am

“For God’s sake, go not to these wars!” – Henry IV, Part II

I thought it was just me, until I found out that my friend and her husband do it too – they compete over the attention of their child!  Mom gets excited when the baby asks for her in the morning; dad gets excited when the baby wants to play with his toys; both fight over who gets to push the stroller in the park.  I’ve always called my husband a baby hog, but I swear, it’s true, and apparently he isn’t the only one!

Bullying

May 18th, 2012 → 8:16 am

“Commit
The oldest sins the newest kind of ways?”  – Henry IV

I’m starting to freak out as a mother.  Lately I’ve been reading a bunch of articles about how hard it is to protect your children nowadays, mainly due to the ubiquitous internet.  Kids can bully each other 24/7 now with Facebook and instant messaging; porn is nearly impossible to screen on mobiles and home computers.  Bullying and porn are old sins, of course, but now being performed in new virtual ways.  It’s kind of making me freak out a little bit.  How will I protect my baby as he gets older?!?!?!?

Growing Apart

May 10th, 2012 → 6:36 am

“A light wife doth make a heavy husband.” – Merchant of Venice

Ever since I bought a fitbit about a month ago, I’ve been addicted to tracking my activities, my sleep, and my meals.  Doing so has led me to lose a couple of pounds without really trying!  Meanwhile, my husband has somehow gained a couple of pounds.  He says we’re growing apart.  Is it my doing?  Should I be worried?

Semester’s End

April 24th, 2012 → 6:16 am

“Is this the promised end?” – King Lear

It’s not just me, I can see it in my student’s eyes – “Are we almost there yet?  Are there really just two weeks of classes left?”  Hello, summer break!  Now if I can just get through all this grading…

Traveling

“Travelers must be content.” – As You Like It

I’m traveling for work right now, and enjoying the people I am meeting and the things I am doing, but still missing home like a shadow at my back.  At least the hotel I am staying at has copious pillows, and they are labeled “soft” and “firm,” which I appreciate!  I’m using the “firm” ones to lean against when I read at night, and the “soft” ones for actually sleeping.  I wish more hotels did this.

Friends

April 8th, 2012 → 6:53 am

“I count myself in nothing else so happy
As in a soul remembering my good friends.”  – Richard II

I had dinner last night at a good friend’s house.  The kind of friend who is generous, kind, clear-headed, and honest.  It’s so important to have good people in your life – they help to balance all the a**holes.

(Happy Pesach and/or Easter Everyone!)

Dieting

April 4th, 2012 → 5:21 am

“Sweetness, whereof a little
More than a little is by much too much.”  – Henry IV

So of course I came back from our vacation having eaten too much.   Room service, restaurants, ice cream by the pool…sigh.  I’m trying to diet this week and not eat too many sweets, but it’s hard.  Normally, my blood content is made up of about 50% sugar/chocolate.  Cutting down is like taking life support away.  😉
