“Nothing ‘gainst Time’s scythe can make defence.” – Sonnet XII

I woke up this morning and saw in the mirror as I washed my face two deep lines running along the sides of my mouth.  Smile lines, or frown lines or what have you.  It made me pause and realize that I am aging; that I may be heading down the other half of the hill at this point.  Ach, it gives me a shiver to think about!

“To know the cause why music was ordain’d!  Was it not to refresh the mind of man after his studies or his usual pain?” – The Taming of the Shrew

Recently I was given an H2O audio for my iPod shuffle.  It lets you listen to music underwater while you swim.  I notice the reviews of the product are hit or miss – some people give it a 5 star, some a 1 star, few a moderate rating in-between – but my H2O audio is great.  Listening to music (or, sometimes, podcasts) somehow makes swimming laps lighter, faster, and easier.  What is the magic of music that makes this happen?

“O curse of marriage!” – Othello

It’s not as bad as all that, but my husband and I did have one of our rare, big fights last night.  Sigh.  Sometimes the one you love most is also the one who aggravates you the most.  Why is that???

“This royal infant (heaven still move about her)
Though in her cradle, yet now promises
Upon this land a thousand blessings,
Which time shall bring to ripeness…”  – Henry VIII

Shakespeare wrote this about Elizabeth I, but I hold the same sentiment for my baby, whose first birthday party is today. Happy First Birthday Party Vincent!  I hope all the decorations, people, laughter and noise aren’t too much for you.  Mummy loves you…

“Our bodies are gardens, to which our wills are gardeners.” – Othello

I’ve been doing a lot of gardening lately, after seven years of completely ignoring our backyard so that it had become something of a cesspool.  It is starting to look quite good.  It is a reminder that patience, time, effort, and determination can do a lot.  Which is what I need to remember regarding my hip as well.  I still can not walk, and surgery was twelve week ago now (!).  This is greatly disappointing, but, I need to just keep at it.  I often tell my students that all worthwhile achievements take effort.  You don’t do well in school without a lot of hard study, you don’t have successful relationships without a lot of difficult communication, and you don’t get a great body without a decent amount of time in the gym.  I doubt my body will ever be great again, but I WILL walk again, and I’m going to keep gardening until I do!!

“But soft, methinks I scent the morning air.” – Hamlet

A little late for me this morning, but it does seem like its going to be a sweet, fresh-smelling day…

Patience…and Success

“Though patience be a tired mare, yet she will plod.” – King Henry V

A former student of mine from the Economics Department at UMSL has been unemployed for over a year.  But he kept trying, kept himself busy, kept up his contacts with his former professors at UMSL, and yesterday he got a job!  And a good job too, at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.  I was really happy to put in a good word for him at the Fed and now I feel so proud of him for getting the job!  Like I felt when another former student of mine got a top job with the Hillary Clinton campaign (when that was still a viable campaign), and when a couple of my former students got into excellent Ph.D. programs around the country.  One of the best things about my day job is the personal satisfaction I get seeing my little kiddos do so well.  🙂

“Foolery…does walk about the orb like the sun; it shines everywhere.” – Twelfth Night

I have no particularly pertinent quote for the day, so I thought I’d just add one that seems to apply all the time!  To politicians, to colleagues, to friends, to family members, to myself.  Ah, the foolish things we do, every day…
