The End is Here

“Let time shape, and there an end.” – Henry IV

It took a long time, but the end of this U.S. presidential election is finally upon us.  I will not be able to get any work done today – at all.

The Downward Spiral of Trump

“Luxurious, avaricious, false, deceitful
Sudden, malicious, smacking of every sin
That has a name.”  – Macbeth

And that name is Donald J. Trump.

Guest Post – Bill Clinton

September 20th, 2016 → 5:28 am

“Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.”
– As You Like It

Or, as rephrased by Bill Clinton on The Daily Show last week:  “I really am in my second childhood!”

Guest Post – Trump Talk

“I am no orator, as Brutus is;
But, as you know me all, a plain blunt man.”  – Julius Caesar

In a recent op-ed in The New York Times, writer Mark Thompson argues that Trump’s ‘I just tell it like it is’ style of speech is actually a historically familiar rhetorical style, shared by Mark Antony, Silvio Berlusconi, and Adolf Hitler.  It is an “anti-rhetoric” rhetoric, which aims at taking a dig at the establishment by pretending to be uber authentic.  It’s been done before, and, frankly, not by leaders we necessarily admire.

“Upon your sword
Sit laurel victory, and smooth success
Be strewed before your feet.”  – Antony and Cleopatra

It’s been such a historic week.  How exciting that I’m alive to be a part of it.

“Good wine is a good familiar creature,
if it be well used:  exclaim no more against it.”  – Othello

Going into the second week of convention politics, where is my glass of wine??

2016 Republican National Convention

July 21st, 2016 → 5:06 am

“They have committed false report;
moreover, they have spoken untruths;
secondarily, they are slanders;
sixth and lastly, they have belied a lady;
thirdly, they have verified unjust things;
and to conclude, they are lying knaves.”  – Much Ado About Nothing

About says it all, I think.

I Fear For Turkey

July 17th, 2016 → 9:45 am

“Over thy wounds now do I prophesy…
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of [Turkey];
Blood and destruction shall be so in use,
And dreadful objects so familiar,
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quartered with the hands of war,
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds;
And [Erdogan’s] spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.”  – Julius Caesar

Hopefully recent events in Turkey won’t turn into all out civil war, but I do fear Erdogan, and his spirit for hot revenge.

“I have been feasting with mine enemy.” – Romeo and Juliet

That’s how I feel these days, every time I get on social media.  Friends (and relatives!) I thought supported me and my inter-racial family, have been posting bigoted, racist comments that just shock me.  And then I face the conundrum, do I say something?  Do I not?  If I do choose to confront them, how can I do it so that they’ll listen?  IS there a way to do it so that they’ll listen and not just get defensive?  That, sadly, I have still not figured out.

“I turn my back.
There is a world elsewhere.”  – Coriolanus

Wow.  Big turn of events.  I pray the fall-out isn’t quite as bad as projected.
