Guest Post – Peaches Petraeus

“Reputation, reputation, reputation!”– Othello

I have to hand it over to Maureen Dowd today, who this morning titled her op-ed piece in The New York Times with the above Shakespeare quote (which continues: “Oh, I have lost my reputation!”).  I had no idea David Petraeus’ nickname was Peaches?!

John Boehner & The Fiscal Cliff

November 12th, 2012 → 5:24 am

“Now is this golden crown like a deep well
That owes two buckets, filling one another,
The emptier ever dancing in the air,
The other down, unseen, and full of water.
That bucket down and full of tears am I,
Drinking my griefs…”  – Richard II

John Boehner was very disappointing last year; completely unable to get his House Republicans under control.  He needs to do better this time around, in particular with the fiscal cliff that’s coming up.  I know he has to balance a lot of buckets (and probably, a lot of tears), but here’s hoping he figures out how to be a leader before December 31, 2012.

The Morning After

November 7th, 2012 → 8:28 am

“The grey-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night,
Chequering the eastern clouds with streaks of light;
And darkness fleckled like a drunkard reels
From forth day’s pathway, made by Titan’s wheels.”  – Romeo and Juliet

I have to admit, I am much relieved.  I was truly worried Romney would win and appoint crazy judges to the Supreme Court and who knows what would happen to abortion, campaign finance, and so many other important issues…  But I can relax this morning.  And take a deep breath.  And admit that while our country still has a lot of issues to deal with, at least we didn’t make things worse yesterday.

Congratulations President Obama.

Just 2 1/2 More Weeks…

October 21st, 2012 → 7:17 am

“All’s well that ends well; still the fine’s the crown.
What’er the course, the end is the renown.”  – All’s Well That Ends Well

I don’t know anyone who can’t wait for this darn U.S. presidential election to be over with already (expect perhaps the pundits?).  In the above quote “fine’s” means “end,” reiterating the point that the best thing now is for this all to be over with already.

Romney as Norway? Ryan, the Thane of Cawdor? Biden=Bellona’s bridegroom?

October 13th, 2012 → 6:50 am

“Norway himself,
With terrible numbers,
Assisted by that most disloyal traitor
The thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict;
Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapp’d in proof,
Confronted him with self-comparisons,
Point against point rebellious, arm ‘gainst arm.
Curbing his lavish spirit: and, to conclude,
The victory fell on us.”  – Macbeth

I realize it’s not as clear cut as the presidential debate last week, but I think Biden won this one.  He sure gave point against point and fought like Bellona (the Roman goddess of war).

Let the Debates Begin

October 3rd, 2012 → 8:08 am

“Shall quips and sentences and these paper bullets of the brain awe a man from the career of his humour?” – Much Ado About Nothing

The U.S. presidential debates begin tonight, and the Romney campaign especially is touting this as a game changer for their candidate.  But can quips and sentences and paper bullets of the brain (I love that last phrase) really portray a candidate in a different light than his essential humor?  Or like Nixon/Kennedy and Reagan/Carter does it more often reveal what’s inside a candidate?  We’ll see…

(P.S. I’m out of town for the next few days – not another post till next week.  🙁 )

Guest Post – Nelson Mandela

September 23rd, 2012 → 5:51 am

“Cowards die many times before their deaths,
The valiant never taste of death but once.”  – Julius Caesar

When Nelson Mandela was a prisoner in South Africa’s notorious apartheid-era Robben Island prison, a Complete Works of Shakespeare was surreptitiously passed around under the guise of a bible.  Many prisoners picked out favorite passages and signed their names by them.  Nelson Mandela signed his name by this one on December 16, 1977.

U.S. as Scapegoat

September 15th, 2012 → 6:49 am

“A staff is quickly found to beat a dog.” – King Henry VI, Part II

Protests against the U.S. appear to be gaining ground across the Muslim world; last I read they had spread to 20 different countries.  All over a stupid video equivalent to a schoolkid prank?  Have you seen the quality of that thing?  I’m sorry but in my opinion what is really going on here is that some fundamentalists are using the video as an excuse to attack the U.S. because they need a scapegoat for their problems.  Absolutely nothing justifies the killings and destruction that have gone on in recent days over a stupidly amateurish YouTube video.

Bill Clinton

September 6th, 2012 → 7:58 am

“A man of fire-new words.” – Love’s Labor’s Lost

I stayed up watching Bill Clinton’s speech last night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, though I should have been doing other things.  It was great.  He sure has a way with words!!

Republican National Convention

August 28th, 2012 → 8:21 am

“‘Tis ten to one this play can never please
All that are here.”  – Henry VIII

The G.O.P. convention starts today (after the weather delay of yesterday).  I hear the Ron Paul supporters are making stink…you can’t please everyone!
