Third Fisherman:  “I marvel how the fishes live in the sea.”

First Fisherman:  “Why, as men do a-land: the great ones eat up the little ones.”  – Pericles

The Occupy Wall Street protesters do have a point.

Nighttime Crying

October 27th, 2011 → 5:55 am

“I must be cruel, only to be kind.” – Hamlet

My 15 month old has begun getting up in the middle of the night again, after nearly a year of sleeping through the night.  Both my husband and my pediatrician say that at this point we need to just let him cry himself out and go back to sleep.  We shouldn’t go in and comfort him. It kills me though, listening to him wail at night and not going in to comfort him.  I guess it’s in his best interest for me to be cruel now so he learns to sleep through the night later, but it’s awful.  Anyone have any advice for how to steel oneself up to be cruel?  I’m not good at it.

2011 World Series – Game 5

October 25th, 2011 → 7:52 am

“I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins
That almost freezes up the heat of life.”  – Romeo and Juliet

Well, after that awesome 3rd game of the World Series where the Cards roared like thunder, they then subsequently lost the next two games.  It is now 2-3 in favor of the Rangers.  Watching the Cards lose last night sent a faint cold fear through my veins.  This is why I don’t normally watch sports – it’s too nerve-wracking!

2011 World Series

October 23rd, 2011 → 7:16 am

“In case of defense, ’tis best to weigh
The enemy more mighty than he seems.”  – Henry V

I’m not much of a baseball fan, but when your home team makes the World Series and people everywhere from the grocery store to the gas station are wearing red Cardinals t-shirts, it’s hard not to get into the spirit.  And thank goodness I watched the game last night!  Albert Pujols was amazing!  He’s now in a league with just 2 other players in history – Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson.  It’s even more neat because the Cardinals were seen as the underdog in this World Series, as having barely made the playoffs.  Which proves the point that you should never underestimate your opponent.

Muammar Qaddafi II

“Sin, death, and hell have set their marks on him.”  – Richard III

The New York Times had a rather gruesome picture of the dead Muammar Qaddafi on their homepage yesterday.  I imagine no one looks good dead, but still, the image made me think that sin, death, and hell were indeed all marked upon the man.  Eek.  I still can’t get the image out of my mind…

Mom

“My heart
Leaps to be gone into my mother’s bosom.”  – Pericles

My mother-in-law is a very nice, very sweet woman.  I love her, I really do.  But she isn’t my mother, and being around her as much as I have been lately just makes me miss my anne (“mother” in Turkish) terribly.  If only my mother could tickle my baby’s toes, if only my mother could pick him up and tell him a story, if only my mother could kiss him on the head and pray for his health.  The 12th anniversary of my mother’s death is coming up in a few days, and it still hurts as much as ever…

God of Carnage

“The times are wild; contention, like a horse
Full of high feeding, madly hath broke loose,
And bears down all before him.”  – Henry IV

I saw the play God of Carnage this weekend and it was hilarious; wild, crazy, madcap like a horse gone wild.  My only criticism was the ending. It didn’t come together very well at all, it just sort of, stopped.

Family

“Love, and be silent.” – King Lear

The in-laws are still in town.  Things are going well.  At least as well as they’d be going with my own family.  I think the approach to take with family in general is to love them, and keep your mouth shut about a lot of things.  😉

“What’s mine is yours, and what is yours is mine.” – Measure for Measure

My in-laws are visiting this week and next.  And when they come, they come in true Montana style.  They drive (never fly), pack the car as if on an extended pilgrimage, and quickly turn the house inside out.  There is stuff everywhere – clothes, mugs, sewing machines, preferred toaster ovens…  I’ve learned to give up on keeping any order when they are here and just go with the flow…what’s mine is theirs and what’s theirs is mine, and pretty soon no one can even tell the difference anymore!

Protest Movements

October 11th, 2011 → 5:33 am

“Who is man that is not angry?” – Timon of Athens

First it was the Tea Party, now it’s Occupy Wall Street, it appears that a new protest movement gains steam in the U.S. every couple of years.  It’s sad that so many people are so unhappy right now.  Although at least our democracy is working.
