Ann Patchett & Karen Hayes

“You two are book-men.” – Love’s Labor’s Lost

One of my favorite novelists, Ann Patchett, and a friend of hers, Karen Hayes, have apparently decided to open a bookstore in Nashville simply because no one else will.  “I have no interest in retail; I have no interest in opening a bookstore.  But I also have no interest in living in a city without a bookstore,” Ms. Patchett is quoted as saying.  That’s a real dedication to books, I’ll say!

Ill-health

    “The thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to!” – Hamlet

My husband’s knee has been hurting him lately.  This weekend when we went out to dinner he limped a bit on the walk to the restaurant.  As it happens, I still haven’t fully recovered from my surgery back in April (!) so I limp sometimes too.  The two of us making our crabbed walk to the restaurant from the back part of the dark parking lot was hilarious, frankly, and could have made anyone who saw us think it was still Halloween.

Bairns

“…they say bairns are blessings.” – All’s Well That Ends Well

I’m late writing on the blog this morning because my baby’s been a real handful!  He still hasn’t gotten used to the time change so he’s been going to bed early, waking up even earlier, and demanding to be hugged, kissed, and fed before 7am!  Ah!

Everything

“…we cry that we are come
To this great stage of fools.” – King Lear

Originally I was thinking that this quote fit the Republican presidential debate last night (and in particular the gaffe by Perry).  But the more I think about it, the more it seems to fit everything that is going on right now.  The political leaders in Europe and their poor handling of the debt crisis, the shocking sexual abuse cover-up at Penn State, a number of my colleagues at work.  It really makes one want to throw up their hands and cry!

Herman Cain

November 8th, 2011 → 6:55 am

“The very substance of the ambitous is merely the shadow of a dream.” – Hamlet

The more I watch Herman Cain and see of his campaign, the more I think there isn’t any substance to it.  And it isn’t just the sexual harassment scandal, but the scary lack of foreign policy knowledge and the surprising inability to give a straight answer to even simple questions.  He may indeed be running for president more to pursue his dream of selling a lot of books, than because he actually wants to run the country.

Jon Corzine

November 6th, 2011 → 5:13 am

    “All that glisters is not gold;
    Often have you heard that told;
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold.” – The Merchant of Venice

This quote, that not all that glitters is really gold, applies both to Jon Corzine and his failed firm, MF Global.  Corzine, we now know, was certainly not the talented man he seemed – he simply took big risks and stole other people’s money.  And MF Global was not a safe place to park your retirement funds, despite what laws and regulations were around to protect it.  I feel as though you can’t trust anyone and nothing is what it seems right now…it’s an awful feeling.

Sleep

November 4th, 2011 → 6:02 am

    “In dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.” – The Tempest

I am so ready to go back to sleep right now…if I could only recapture that last dream I was having…

Greek Debt

November 2nd, 2011 → 6:34 am

    “In Greece…
Though there the people had more absolute power –
I say they nourished disobedience, fed
The ruin of the state.” – Coriolanus

The problems of the Euro Crisis and the Greek debt just aren’t going away.  Every time Europe gets close to closing in on a deal, either they don’t, or the deal turns out to be pretty lame.  In economics, as in politics, one needs to get ahead of these situations to solve them.  But now the Europeans are so far behind, I don’t know what is going to happen…

“‘Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world.  Now could I drink hot blood,
And do such bitter business as the day
Would quake to look on.” – Hamlet

Happy Halloween everyone!!

Third Fisherman: “I marvel how the fishes live in the sea.”

First Fisherman: “Why, as men do a-land: the great ones eat up the little ones.”

                                                                                      – Pericles

The Occupy Wall Street protesters do have a point.
