2016 Republican National Convention

July 21st, 2016 → 5:06 am

“They have committed false report;
moreover, they have spoken untruths;
secondarily, they are slanders;
sixth and lastly, they have belied a lady;
thirdly, they have verified unjust things;
and to conclude, they are lying knaves.”  – Much Ado About Nothing

About says it all, I think.

I Fear For Turkey

July 17th, 2016 → 9:45 am

“Over thy wounds now do I prophesy…
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of [Turkey];
Blood and destruction shall be so in use,
And dreadful objects so familiar,
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quartered with the hands of war,
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds;
And [Erdogan’s] spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.”  – Julius Caesar

Hopefully recent events in Turkey won’t turn into all out civil war, but I do fear Erdogan, and his spirit for hot revenge.

This World Right Now

July 8th, 2016 → 6:17 am

“This world’s a city full of straying streets,
And death’s the market-place where each one meets.”  – Two Noble Kinsmen

A friend of mine wrote on Facebook yesterday:  What is happening in this world?  Mass shootings, police shootings, tales of hate and violence nearly every day now.  And it seems like it’s in a particularly bad phase.  What to do??

Recep Tayyip Erdogan

“Mine eyes are cloyed with view of tyranny.” – Titus Andronicus

What is happening to Turkey?  I remember when Erdogan was first elected and there was (some) optimism in the air.  In recent years, however, he has turned the arrogant tyrant.  Oh Turkey, our best hope for a Muslim democracy in the Middle East, what is happening to you?!?!?!?

Panama Papers

“You smell this business with a sense as cold
As is a dead man’s nose.”  – Winter’s Tale

The quote above implies that those who hide money overseas don’t quite get how smelly that is.  And I love how so many articles have been written lately explaining the various legitimate reasons for secret offshore bank accounts.  *Sigh*  It just stinks, admit it.

Terrorists

March 25th, 2016 → 5:17 am

“Which is the villain?  Let me see his eyes,
That when I note another man like him
I may avoid him.”  – Much Ado About Nothing

I wish it were that easy.  To recognize a terrorist.  But they seem to defy easy categorization.

God help Belgium, and the next nation where a terrorist attack will take place before we know it…

Donald Trump Rallies

March 13th, 2016 → 6:34 am

“He is come to open
The purple testament of bleeding war.”  – Richard II

Shakespeare often used “purple” where today we would use “red,” i.e. to mean bloody.  I wonder sometimes if that is because Shakespeare actually meant not just a bloody cut, but an internal organ evisceration-type injury, which in truth is more gross, more deadly, and more colorful – and likely purple, not red.  Either way, Trump does seem to have come to politics to open bloody warfare.  God help us.

Antonin Scalia

February 16th, 2016 → 6:22 am

“Dead as a doornail.” – Henry VI, Part II

I think we’re all in a bit of shock over the announcement of Antonin Scalia’s death over the weekend.  Shakespeare has many quotes about death (almost as many as he has about love), but I chose to use this one because it seemed so abrupt, succinct, and in your face.  Much like Scalia himself.

Plus, I love putting up quotes of phrases we use today, but which so many people don’t even realize come from Shakespeare!

Cecil the Lion

July 31st, 2015 → 5:43 am

“The poor [lion] that we tread upon
In corporal sufferance finds a pang as great
As when a giant dies.”  – Measure for Measure

Like the rest of the world, I am horrified by the killing of Cecil the Lion by the insensitive, psychopathic Walter Palmer.  I honestly do not understand why big game hunters are actually proud of killing beautiful, endangered animals; how can they hug their dead bodies and pose next to them smiling?!?  I literally do not understand such barbarity; images of it online make my stomach turn.  R.I.P. Cecil and the thousands of your brethren shot every year, the majority of the world’s empathy is with you.
