Getting an Education – Not?

“I am no breeching scholar in the schools;
I’ll not be tied to hours nor ‘pointed themes,
But learn my lessons as I please myself.”  – The Taming of the Shrew

We’ve been hearing for a long time about problems in the K-12 school system in the U.S.  Increasingly, we’re hearing it with regards to secondary education as well (though for a positive outlook, look here).  I don’t doubt that there are problems with both, but I do maintain that the problems are not entirely the fault of the teachers or the schools.  Students have to be prepared to be in school and they have to want to be there.  You can’t teach to a student who either never shows up for class, or who insists from day one that schools have nothing to teach them and they shall ‘learn their lessons as they please themselves.’   There’s responsibility to go around for everyone here in explaining the problems we face.

Anders Behring Breivik

“What a brood of traitors have we here!” – Henry VI

Anders Behring Breivik is the Norwegian man on trial right now for killing 77 people last summer.  He claims he did it to defend Norway against traitorous immigrants, when in truth, he is the traitor.  He has sold out common decency for the benefit of villainous horror.

Can’t wait for the traveling to be done and to return to my family!

“Travelers must be content.” – As You Like It

I’m traveling for work right now, and enjoying the people I am meeting and the things I am doing, but still missing home like a shadow at my back.  At least the hotel I am staying at has copious pillows, and they are labeled “soft” and “firm,” which I appreciate!  I’m using the “firm” ones to lean against when I read at night, and the “soft” ones for actually sleeping.  I wish more hotels did this.

“His complexion is perfect gallows.” – The Tempest

First it was the Trayvon Martin shooting.  Now it’s the Tulsa, Oklahoma shooting.  I’m starting to fear I won’t be able to tell my son (who is African American) that he is growing up in a better world than I did.  A person’s skin color should not be a reason for the gallows.

Trayvon Martin

“Mislike me not for my complexion.” – Merchant of Venice

The special prosecutor announced yesterday that there won’t be a grand jury investigation into the Trayvon Martin shooting.  It’s my understanding that his shooter, George Zimmerman, can still be prosecuted, just not any longer by a grand jury.  All I know is that he shouldn’t have pursued the boy after the police dispatcher told him not to, and that it appears to me as though he judged Trayvon primarily on his looks and his hoodie.  For the love of god, why can’t we as a society get past such behavior?!?!

“I count myself in nothing else so happy
As in a soul remembering my good friends.”  – Richard II

I had dinner last night at a good friend’s house.  The kind of friend who is generous, kind, clear-headed, and honest.  It’s so important to have good people in your life – they help to balance all the a**holes.

Judicial Activism

April 6th, 2012 → 6:14 am

“We shall see
If power change purpose, what our seemers be.”  – Measure for Measure

For years the right has complained about judicial activism in the courts – that rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, for example, have been wrong and an overuse of power.  Now the U.S. Supreme Court is contemplating Obama’s health care law.  If they rule to overturn it, by what possible measure can that be anything but the very judicial activism they claim so vociferously to dislike?

Dieting

“Sweetness, whereof a little
More than a little is by much too much.”  – Henry IV

So of course I came back from our vacation having eaten too much.   Room service, restaurants, ice cream by the pool…sigh.  I’m trying to diet this week and not eat too many sweets, but it’s hard.  Normally, my blood content is made up of about 50% sugar/chocolate.  Cutting down is like taking life support away.  😉

“Like a nymph, with long, disheveled hair,
Dance on the sands, and yet no footing seen.”  – Venus and Adonis

We’re back from spring break in Hawaii!  Eight days of salt encrusted long, disheveled hair; eight nights of dancing on the sands.  Our little baby was a real traveler trooper.  I don’t usually include photos on this blog, but heck, this one is too cute:
