“Where is the life that late I led?” – The Taming of the Shrew
It’s barely two weeks since the semester started at school, but already things feel so hectic! Students, classes, lecture notes, problem sets…where did the time go for just sitting at my desk and playing on the computer??!!

“The ground that gave them first has them again.
Their pleasures here are past, so is their pain.” – Cymbeline
Today is the anniversary (“yartzeit” in Judaism) of my father’s death. It’s been a long time – he died while I was in high school – but I still miss him and think about him every year. I know that at the end of his life he had some joys, but also some serious troubles…if one is now gone, at least the other is too. I wish I could give you a hug, Daddy.

“And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel,
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.” – As You Like It
School starts again this week at colleges and universities across the country. When I was a student I didn’t creep to class so unwillingly as Shakespeare describes here, but then again, I was sorta geeky. That’s probably why I became a professor, after all. Happy first week of classes everyone!

“O wonderful son, that can so astonish a mother!” – Hamlet
This holiday season was the first time many of my relatives got a chance to meet my newly adopted son. And it went swimmingly! My baby was friendly and cute and playful the entire time, even with all the new people, places, and smells. We couldn’t have shown off a better baby – I say this as I hear him crying a fit downstairs in the kitchen right now, but whatever…

“I am Misanthropos, and hate mankind.” – Timon of Athens
Sometimes, I am just not into the holiday cheer.

“No more cakes and ale.” – Twelfth Night
They say the average person gains about five pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. I’ve still got a couple of weeks to go, but there are so many cookies in the house I may have reached my quota already. Ugh. I feel gross this morning…

“I were better to be eaten to death with a rust than to be scoured to nothing with perpetual motion.” – Henry IV, Part II
This weekend my husband sat on the couch doing nothing, while I ran around the house baking, cleaning, and holiday decorating. By Sunday afternoon it got on my nerves and we had one of our occasional spats about his couch potato tendencies. But in the end, who really is right? Was it really necessary for me to bake my ass off just to give the neighbors some holiday cookies? Sometimes I wish I could be more of a couch potato, but I actually fear I just don’t have it in me.

“The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together.” – All’s Well That Ends Well
I had a really good week last week (if you remember my happy online shopping and holiday planning), and then this week went to pot. There was a major scare at my child’s day care, and then my husband had an accident… Life just goes up, and then down, doesn’t it? Good and ill together. Here’s looking forward to the next up already…

“Now I am in a holiday humor.” – As You Like It
As of yesterday my neighbors have put up all their Christmas lights, I did engage in a little Monday (not to mention Tuesday) cyber shopping these past few days, and I have already ordered my Christmas ham (I know, I’m Jewish, but..). I appear to have caught the holiday spirit early this year – as it is still only November!

“Knock, knock, knock. Who’s there, i’th’ name of Belzebub?” – Macbeth
I’m back! In the name of Beelzebub or something else (something better, I hope). I had an excellent conference and an even better vacation this past week. I hope everyone else enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday as well. I can’t wait to start writing more posts, so stay tuned!
