“Society is no comfort
to one not sociable.”  – Cymbeline

I think I caught a cold on my recent travels.  My head hurts and I can’t stop coughing.  I’ve got to teach and go to work but frankly I’d prefer to just crawl back into bed and stay there.  I really don’t feel like being a part of society today.  *sigh*

Baby Talk

October 1st, 2012 → 5:29 am

“So sweet and voluble is his discourse.” – Love’s Labor’s Lost

My 2 year old son is talking more and more every day, and I love it!!  I love knowing what he is thinking and watching as he processes the world.  My husband is dreading the “why” phase (“but why does Emma have that ball?”; “but why did her mommy buy it for her?”; “but why does she love her so much?”) but in all honesty, I can’t wait for that too!  What mother doesn’t love watching her baby use language for the first time?

Which Shakespeare Heroine Are you?

September 27th, 2012 → 5:54 am

I was alerted yesterday to this silly quiz which purports to tell you which Shakespeare heroine you are most like.  My score put me between Titania and Viola which, after rounding up, makes me most like Viola.  Yeah, I am sort of “boyish, mischevious, and inventive,” I’ll go with that.

TV

“A kind
Of excellent dumb discourse.”  – Tempest

Shakespeare said this about the dancing creatures that bring a banquet to the shipwrecked king in the Tempest.  It reminds me of the one, precious hour of TV I get at night after my son goes to bed and before I fall off into helpless sleep myself.  In the last few weeks I’ve caught up on Homeland and Dexter and am looking forward to the new seasons beginning at the end of the month.  Here’s to relaxing with excellent dumb TV at the end of the day…

Evil Child

September 10th, 2012 → 6:29 am

“O, what may [child] within him hide, though angel on the outward side!” – Measure for Measure

My beautiful child has definitely entered the terrible twos.  He runs off towards the street and won’t stop when you yell after him.  He says he’s eaten his chewable vitamins, but I find them licked and stuck on the underside of tables.  He throws his books down and when I say that makes me sad he throws them harder and asks eagerly “Is Mommy sad?”  Sigh.  What’s a mother to do??

Morning Dream

August 26th, 2012 → 9:03 am

“Dream on, dream on.” – Richard III

My husband pulled my baby off the bed this morning and let me sleep an extra hour.  Until our little son snuck past him, climbed back on the bed, and jumped on me yelling, “Mommy Up!  Mommy Up!”  Until that moment I was having a nice dream…  Dream on if I think I’m going to be allowed to keep dreaming in the mornings…

Learning to Swim

August 8th, 2012 → 8:00 am

“I saw him beat the surges under him,
And ride upon their backs; he trod the water,
Whose enmity he flung aside, and breasted
The surge most swoln that met him; his bold head
‘Bove the contentious waves he kept, and oared
Himself with his good arms in lusty stroke
To th’ shore.”  – Tempest

I can’t tell if my son likes the water.  One day he seems to, the next he cries when you try to put him in.  In an effort to enjoy the last few days of summer I took off work early yesterday and we all went to the pool.  On a Tuesday afternoon it was completely uncrowded and we were able to practice blowing bubbles and moving our arms as if we were swimming.  I think he liked it!  Next on the agenda: swim classes with his girlfriend Sarah.

“Eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog.” – Macbeth

I’m traveling right now and stuck in airports…and the above curse just felt right right now.

Hot Summer Parties

July 8th, 2012 → 6:15 am

“Good company, good wine, good welcome
Can make good people.”  – Henry VIII

It definitely feels like summer now.  With all the birthday parties, holidays, and in-law visits, it’s been weeks of picnics, barbeques, parades, and light beer in the sun.  This is exactly what summer should feel like.

Happy Birthday +1

July 6th, 2012 → 6:21 am

“There’s beggary in the love that can be reckoned.” – Antony and Cleopatra

This time it is my husband who gets the Happy Birthday wish!  I chose the quote above because it’s probably the greatest lesson my husband has taught me over the years – not to reckon love.  When I first met him I was much more concerned with “evenness” – I cleaned the bathrooms this week, your turn next week, I bought dinner last time, now it’s your turn, etc.  It took me awhile, but I finally gave all that up.  And in so doing it did change my perspective to be less about “him” and “me”, and more about simply “us.”  Happy Birthday baby.
