Aphorism II

August 30th, 2012 → 7:48 am

“The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together.” – All’s Well That Ends Well

I’m running late this morning, and though I hate aphorisms (they’re usually too preachy), here’s a good one to start the day.

Morning Dream

August 26th, 2012 → 9:03 am

“Dream on, dream on.” – Richard III

My husband pulled my baby off the bed this morning and let me sleep an extra hour.  Until our little son snuck past him, climbed back on the bed, and jumped on me yelling, “Mommy Up!  Mommy Up!”  Until that moment I was having a nice dream…  Dream on if I think I’m going to be allowed to keep dreaming in the mornings…

Decline and Fall?

August 24th, 2012 → 6:00 am

“We have seen the best of our time.” – King Lear

A friend emailed me the other day asking if I thought the world was on the decline; if morals had been abandoned by politicians, if the current generation was excessively lazy, if entrepreneurs and businesspeople were unconscionably conniving.  I don’t know, but the fear that we are on the decline appears to be a repeated one throughout history.  Every generation seems to think the next one is lazier, the politicians even worse, etc.  I know they are from his plays, but Shakespeare repeatedly has characters saying that this is it, but was it?  We have a lot of problems in this world, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not so narcissistic to think MY time is the pinnacle.

Mars Rover Curiosity

August 14th, 2012 → 7:55 am

“The readiness is all.” – Hamlet

Last week NASA’s rover Curiosity landed on Mars flawlessly.  Which is amazing because a million things could have gone wrong, and so much had to of been prepared ahead of time.  I am impressed with the readiness and thorough job NASA did.  And it seems Curiosity is sending back good stuff!  Yeah for science!

Morning Wind

August 10th, 2012 → 7:47 am

“There is something in the wind.” – The Comedy of Errors

I woke up this morning and stepped outside into a cold, strong wind.  There always comes a day, a moment even, when it feels like the seasons are shifting.  This morning was it, reminding me yet again that summer is nearly over.  🙁

Learning to Swim

August 8th, 2012 → 8:00 am

“I saw him beat the surges under him,
And ride upon their backs; he trod the water,
Whose enmity he flung aside, and breasted
The surge most swoln that met him; his bold head
‘Bove the contentious waves he kept, and oared
Himself with his good arms in lusty stroke
To th’ shore.”  – Tempest

I can’t tell if my son likes the water.  One day he seems to, the next he cries when you try to put him in.  In an effort to enjoy the last few days of summer I took off work early yesterday and we all went to the pool.  On a Tuesday afternoon it was completely uncrowded and we were able to practice blowing bubbles and moving our arms as if we were swimming.  I think he liked it!  Next on the agenda: swim classes with his girlfriend Sarah.

Madness

August 6th, 2012 → 8:10 am

“Now see that noble and most sovereign reason
Like sweet bells jangled out of tune and harsh,
That unmatched form and feature of blown youth
Blasted with ecstasy.”  – Hamlet

What is up with all the shootings lately?  Is there that much madness in the world?  Is the opportunity to do mass harm just too easy?  Things looked sunny and warm and happy yesterday, but clearly not for everyone…
