Getting an Education – Not?

April 20th, 2012 → 7:58 am

“I am no breeching scholar in the schools;
I’ll not be tied to hours nor ‘pointed themes,
But learn my lessons as I please myself.”  – The Taming of the Shrew

We’ve been hearing for a long time about problems in the K-12 school system in the U.S.  Increasingly, we’re hearing it with regards to secondary education as well (though for a positive outlook, look here).  I don’t doubt that there are problems with both, but I do maintain that the problems are not entirely the fault of the teachers or the schools.  Students have to be prepared to be in school and they have to want to be there.  You can’t teach to a student who either never shows up for class, or who insists from day one that schools have nothing to teach them and they shall ‘learn their lessons as they please themselves.’   There’s responsibility to go around for everyone here in explaining the problems we face.

Traveling

“Travelers must be content.” – As You Like It

I’m traveling for work right now, and enjoying the people I am meeting and the things I am doing, but still missing home like a shadow at my back.  At least the hotel I am staying at has copious pillows, and they are labeled “soft” and “firm,” which I appreciate!  I’m using the “firm” ones to lean against when I read at night, and the “soft” ones for actually sleeping.  I wish more hotels did this.

Dieting

April 4th, 2012 → 5:21 am

“Sweetness, whereof a little
More than a little is by much too much.”  – Henry IV

So of course I came back from our vacation having eaten too much.   Room service, restaurants, ice cream by the pool…sigh.  I’m trying to diet this week and not eat too many sweets, but it’s hard.  Normally, my blood content is made up of about 50% sugar/chocolate.  Cutting down is like taking life support away.  😉

“Like a nymph, with long, disheveled hair,
Dance on the sands, and yet no footing seen.”  – Venus and Adonis

We’re back from spring break in Hawaii!  Eight days of salt encrusted long, disheveled hair; eight nights of dancing on the sands.  Our little baby was a real traveler trooper.  I don’t usually include photos on this blog, but heck, this one is too cute:

Spring Break

March 21st, 2012 → 5:58 am

“If all the year were playing holidays,
To sport would be as tedious as to work;
But when they seldom come, they wished-for come.”  – Henry IV, Part I

Thank goodness for spring break.  I’ll be taking some time off myself, so this will be my last post for a few days…but I’ll be back next week with some good quotes about family vacations!

“The Moon! Mommy, the Moon!”

March 17th, 2012 → 7:38 am

“How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!” – Merchant of Venice

My son has his favorite words:  “Car”  “Airplane”  “Cracker”.  All of a sudden, he’s added “Moon” to the list.  Before he goes to bed at night he wants to see the moon up in the sky, and when he wakes up in the morning he wants to search for it again.  I’m not sure why he’s so enamored of the moon all of a sudden, but it is cute.

Jane Austen Fight Club

“O tiger’s heart wrapped in a woman’s hide!” – Henry VI

A friend from my writing group (thank you Reggie) alerted me to this Jane Austen Fight Club video yesterday.  It’s hilarious!  I just had to share it with readers of this blog as well.  Enjoy.

Taxes

March 13th, 2012 → 7:17 am

“That’s the wavering commons, for their love
Lies in their purses, and whoso empties them,
By so much fills their hearts with deadly hate.”  – Richard II

I’ve been doing our taxes the last couple of days.  It’s exhausting!  But this year it looks like we’re getting a refund (thank you adoption credit), so my purse isn’t empty and my heart is not filled with deadly hate!

“Wife and child,
Those precious motives, those strong knots of love.”  – Macbeth

Here’s to a Sunday at home with the family.  Too bad it’s an hour short.
