“Confusion now hath made his masterpiece!” – Macbeth

What a disappointment.  I sure hope they figure it out soon, so that the website’s failure doesn’t torpedo the entire Affordable Care Act!

A Good Quote

October 23rd, 2013 → 5:39 am

“‘Tis the mind that makes the body rich.” – Taming of the Shrew

I’m not sure what to write about today, so here’s just a good quote.  One of my favorites.

California Sea Serpents

October 21st, 2013 → 6:12 am

“This bodes some strange eruption to our state.” – Hamlet

Horatio spoke this line on the appearance of the ghost in Hamlet; it duly set off the rest of the Shakespearian tragedy.  I hope the strange oarfish (a.k.a. sea serpents) suddenly washing up on California’s shores don’t bode some similar sort of tragedy, like that our oceans are even more acidic, polluted, GHG infested than we even imagined.

Malala Yousafzai

October 16th, 2013 → 6:34 am

“Why should she live to fill the world with words?” – Henry VI

I’m sure the Taliban are asking this question every day they see Malala on the television again, giving another interview, raising more awareness for her cause.  Why?  Because she has something rather important to say.

Labor Day

September 2nd, 2013 → 6:28 am

“Sir, I am a true labourer:
I earn that I eat, get that I wear;
owe no man hate, envy no man’s happiness;
glad of other men’s good, content with my harm.”  – As You Like It

We should all be so content and self-sufficient.  A good wish on this Labor Day.

“O true apothecary,
Thy drugs are quick.”  – Romeo and Juliet

Thank god for antibiotics!  I’m feeling better already.

Happy First Day of Classes!

August 19th, 2013 → 5:58 am

“And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel,
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.”  – As You Like It

I know I’ve used this quote before (and I try to avoid that), but it’s such a good one for the first day of classes.  And today is the first day for UMSL, and I’m sure many other institutions.  Happy new term everyone!

Area 51 Declassified

August 17th, 2013 → 8:01 am

“Child Rowland to the dark tower came,
His word was still, — Fie, foh, and fum,
I smell the blood of an [alien].”  – King Lear

Apparently Area 51 exists (!), as newly declassified government documents acknowledge.  No mention of aliens, but you never know…  The Dark Tower in the English fairy tale did exist, though it was difficult to find…

Guest Post – Love in the Long Run

August 12th, 2013 → 6:24 am

“Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds.”  – Sonnet 116

I’m currently reading Far From the Tree by Andrew Solomon, and it’s quite engrossing.  I’m learning all about dwarfs, prodigies, schizophrenics, and more.  At one point Solomon vigorously disputes the above quote, saying it is not true that love is constant, but instead that it “alters all the time; it is fluid, in perpetual flux, an evolving business across a lifetime.”  I think the distinction may be between love in the short run and love in the long run.  Over the long run, sure, love evolves.  But if in the short run your love for someone easily alters, it probably isn’t actually love, but something else.

Back to School with Shakespeare

July 31st, 2013 → 6:01 am

“Love goes toward love, as schoolboys from their books,
But love from love, toward school with heavy looks.”  – Romeo and Juliet

A most excellent reader of this blog alerted me to a link where you can get Back to School Shakespeare quotes.  My only problem with the above quote is, why does it have to make NOT studying equivalent to falling in love and reuniting with a lover?  Am I the only one in this world who enjoyed school and studying growing up?  Having said that, I am sad that today is the last day of July, and that soon summer will be over…  I’m such a hypocrite…
