“You and I are past our dancing days.” – Romeo and Juliet

Last night Jon Stewart ended his tenure at the Daily Show, while the G.O.P. proved their party is on the decline.  Both are at the end of an era.  And while both proved highly entertaining last night in their last dancing throes, I have to admit, I will miss them both…

I agree that the GOP debate was entertaining, but after a while, I found it somewhat painful to watch. I thought Fiorina did reasonably well, but Bush stumbled repeatedly, Paul looked like a bigger jerk/ignoramus than usual (which is kind of impressive in its own way), Walker was forgettable, and then there was Trump. I’m not sure if I should consider it the height of comedy or tragedy that Mr. Trump leads in any poll other than ‘pompous jerks with bad hair and no filter’.

In my opinion, the debate reinforced the idea that the Republican party desperately needs to split into two parties (fiscally conservative, social moderates vs. so-called social conservatives w/o a bloody clue about the economy or much else). Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Of course, I once thought the Democrats would split between moderates and far-left lines, too. Clearly, I’m not much of a political prognosticator.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Both to the GOP and to the democratic party. I just hope our country does ok through it all – it’s hard to tell sometimes…
