Morning Wind

“There is something in the wind.” – The Comedy of Errors

I woke up this morning and stepped outside into a cold, strong wind.  There always comes a day, a moment even, when it feels like the seasons are shifting.  This morning was it, reminding me yet again that summer is nearly over.  🙁

Learning to Swim

August 8th, 2012 → 8:00 am

“I saw him beat the surges under him,
And ride upon their backs; he trod the water,
Whose enmity he flung aside, and breasted
The surge most swoln that met him; his bold head
‘Bove the contentious waves he kept, and oared
Himself with his good arms in lusty stroke
To th’ shore.”  – Tempest

I can’t tell if my son likes the water.  One day he seems to, the next he cries when you try to put him in.  In an effort to enjoy the last few days of summer I took off work early yesterday and we all went to the pool.  On a Tuesday afternoon it was completely uncrowded and we were able to practice blowing bubbles and moving our arms as if we were swimming.  I think he liked it!  Next on the agenda: swim classes with his girlfriend Sarah.

Madness

August 6th, 2012 → 8:10 am

“Now see that noble and most sovereign reason
Like sweet bells jangled out of tune and harsh,
That unmatched form and feature of blown youth
Blasted with ecstasy.”  – Hamlet

What is up with all the shootings lately?  Is there that much madness in the world?  Is the opportunity to do mass harm just too easy?  Things looked sunny and warm and happy yesterday, but clearly not for everyone…

“Make not your thoughts your prisons.” – Antony and Cleopatra

I think of this quote every time I have to listen to one of my colleagues spout his crazy theories during lunch.  Untested theories are all well and good, but they become prisons when you absolutely refuse to broach criticism of them or accept alternate perspectives that might challenge them.

But lately this quote has come to mean something more to me.  Some days I just can’t get past my own annoyance at the world, and that in itself then frustrates me more!  Ha!  I wish sometimes I could just let things go already…  let stupid thoughts just escape the prison of my mind and disappear…

Political Gaffes

August 1st, 2012 → 7:49 am

“Out idle words, servants to shallow fools,
Unprofitable sounds, weak arbitrators!”  – Lucrece

Romney really stuck his foot in his mouth, on multiple occasions during his recent overseas trip.  I’m sure being a politician is hard, being in the spotlight most of the time is hard, but come on.  What I really want to know is, why does Romney want to be president?  What drives him?  What’s making him go through all this?  A desire to quell injustice?  Pride and nationalism in country?  An innate sense of duty?  Or is it really just that he wants to be president, because that seems another cool job to which to aspire?
