“No word to save thee.” – Measure for Measure

Jonathan Franzen, alleged author of the year, expressed his true nature with this misogynistic article about Edith Wharton in the New Yorker.  It makes me enraged, the misogyny against women that still exists in the world.  I imagine there will always be racism, bigotry, meanness of some form in society, whether it be against women, overweight people, African Americans, or whatever, but why?  Why does it have to be this way??  It just makes me so mad!!

What I really hate is when those prejudiced people are successful. My sense of fairness says that although there will always be snobs and hateful people, they should always be relegated to the dregs of life where they belong, and that the inherently good people should rise to the top. But it’s not always that way.

No, it’s not always that way, but wouldn’t it be great if it were? I totally agree with your analysis of how things should be.

Unfortunately, it seems likely that having such a biased, and thus limiting, view of the world probably helps with one’s focus. If he’s actually as intelligent as some of the articles about him imply–regardless of how foolish he may be since wisdom and intellect don’t appear to be very highly correlated–then his misogynistic views probably make it easier for him to write complete (though biased) stories effectively. Also, there never seems to be a shortage of idiots in the marketplace who are interested in his kind of crap.

That’s an interesting thought… so does it mean that bad writers are bad because they are not prejudiced??

No, but I do think it’s easier for someone who has the skills to be a good writer to be successful if his/her focus is narrow. Also, I think that despite a lot of talk to the contrary, misogyny gets a pass by a large portion of the general marketplace. Just my opinion, but it has long seemed to me that too few people use their wallets to back up their words.
